Flag Football - How To

Flag Football is predominantly a 5-a-side game in Britain, but it can also be played in 3s or 7s formats. A cross between Basketball and American Football it's a limited contact sport where one team tries to progress the ball against the other through the air or on the ground, whilst their opponent tries to halt progress by intercepting airborn passes or by removing a flag from a runners hip to make a tackle.

The sport is open to all genders and age groups.

The Basics

  • At any given time one team will attack whilst the other defends​

  • An attacking team has 4 attampts (downs) to progress half the field

  • Only one forward pass can happen per attempt (play)

  • Backwards passess are unlimited behind the line where the ball started

  • The offense has 7 seconds to release the ball and their opponent can choose to send a player to rush them

  • Once a play ends, the ball is respotted and play resets

  • Scores are worth 6 points, with the option of an additional 1 or 2 point conversion​

  • If the attacking team is unsuccessful in progressing the ball within their limited attempts, their opponent gets to attack instead
